CPI Follow up Workshop in Sri Lanka “The color of the colors”

Multi-Cultural Folk Music workshop

Chandani Warushakoon (2016 CPI Participant of National Theater of Korea)

The period of October 01st-06th, we added color to the long-lasting friendship of Korea and Sri Lanka.

My name is Chandani Warushakoon and I am a CPI participant of National Theater of Korea in 2016.
Since I was selected as a coordinator of the Follow-up Workshop by KOFICE,
I was able to strengthen our cultural Exchange between Korea and Sri Lanka.

Korean Professionals (Kim Bong-geun & Oh Hyewon)
Kim Bong-geun and local’s music collaboration

Two Korean musicians from Jindo Natioanl gugak Center, Ms. Oh Hyewon, Korean traditional vocalist, and Mr. Kim Bong Geun, Jang-Gu player were invited to Sri Lanka for the Follow-up workshop as Korean professionals. Though we are a small island in the Indian Ocean, we have a rich cultural heritage and reconciliation in our country. Therefore, I was able to get the assistance of local Folk Musicians in this endeavor. Accordingly, we could strengthen ourselves with professionals of the Sri Lankan Folk Music, Mozambique Folk Music Artistes with African origin, and artistes with Portuguese origin.

Other participants of the workshop were Music teachers in government and international schools, Cultural and Anthropology Researchers, Cultural Officers, Instructors of Fine Arts, and University students.

At the end of the program which was held for two days with many participants, there was a cultural event named “The color of the colors”. The audience could see wonderful performances by not only Korean musicians, but also traditional song and dance of Sri Lankan, African, and Portuguese. There was some collaborative music as well.

Negambo Cultural Center
Charana TV program

In the workshop, we divided into two groups. One is “Love” and the other is “Happiness”. The music lovers were overjoyed to see the talents of these two groups. The major objective of this workshop was how to express a single feeling by using various cultural themes through folk music. The other objectives were to meet new friends, to adjust to new environments, to increase the knowledge on folk music of various culture and to develop its communications skills.

Subsequently, a program was held for the students of the cultural center of Negambo. Also, a Live TV program was telecast at National TV Corporation in Sri Lanka and a recorded TV program was performed at “Charana” YouTube TV Channel.

Thanks to KOFICE for supporting this successful workshop.
Also, thanks for the patronage given by the Department of Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka.
All participants could have pleasant and wonderful memories in their mind.
We all hope to have another unforgettable encounter in near future.
